Siemens’ most advanced factory for production of distribution transformers breaks ground in Guangzhou

• “Will apply “Industrie 4.0” standard and become a Siemens model factory in global distribution transformer field

• Production capacity will double after completion of the new factory

• Siemens IoT Services provides digital factory planning and consulting services to the new factory

The groundbreaking ceremony of Siemens’ most advanced factory for production of distribution transformers was held in Guangzhou today. The new factory will apply “Industrie 4.0” standard and become a Siemens model factory in the global distribution transformer field. Meanwhile, as a key part of Siemens global transformer R&D and manufacturing network, the new factory will provide medium- and high-end transformers and solutions to the global transformer market. It is estimated to be completed and put into operation by 2021, when all the existing production facilities of Siemens Transformer (Guangzhou) Co., Ltd. (STGZ) will be relocated in the new site and the production capacity will double.

“Currently, China’s distribution transformer market has been growing rapidly. The new distribution transformer factory will give full play to Siemens’ leading advantages in digitalization, realize digital and intelligent production in the field of distribution transformers, so as to better meet the increasing needs of the market and customers.” Said Wang Jian Lei, General Manager of Transmission Products, Gas and Power, Siemens Ltd., China, “The factory will become a model factory for Siemens in the field of intelligent manufacturing in Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area, and will drive the digital transformation and upgrading of the traditional manufacturing industry in the region.”

STGZ has been Siemens’ only dry-type transformer manufacturing base in China since Siemens introduced its GEAFOL dry-type transformer technology in China in 2007. Also, STGZ established the first global dry-type transformer R&D center outside of Germany in 2016. In recent years, the distribution transformer market sees a rapid growth, and the existing factory of STGZ can’t meet the business requirements any longer. So STGZ decided to build a new distribution transformer factory which will fully leverage Siemens’ global leadership in digital business to enable the whole process to highly integrate into intelligence and automation, and takes the lead in realizing standardized intelligent operation and digital manufacturing in the field of distribution transformer manufacturing.

Before the construction of the new factory, Siemens IoT Services provided it with digital plant planning and consulting services, starting from the enterprise blueprint to carry out digital top-level planning to achieve the coordinated development of all departments. Through the lean concept of the overall layout design of the factory, Siemens IoT services optimize the process and identify the waste, and make research and optimization on the overall factory production line. Also, the concept of factory automation is adopted to replace repetitive labor with machines. In addition, the key to realize manufacturing informatization is “visualization”. The application of system software reduces human error rate and improves data transparency, so as to better “find problems”. And it also can present the future factory in a vivid and visual way through 3D modeling technology.
