Totally Integrated Automation (TIA) and Totally Integrated Power (TIP)

Totally Integrated Automation (TIA) and Totally Integrated Power (TIP) represent ideal power management. The platform strategy of Siemens Automation & Drives shapes the automation market. That's because tapping the potential for improvements in productivity can no longer be boosted by isolated improvements: Instead, it requires seamless horizontal and vertical integration of information, communication, and automation technologies into company processes. That potential for improving the productivity of production and process technologies offers companies new ways to cut their costs.

The Siemens TIP platform offers continuous solutions for electrical distribution in purpose and industrial buildings from the medium voltage source to the power outlet. TIP is offering a clear potential for savings through connecting energy distribution systems to industrial automation and building automation systems. This happens through continuity in planning and project management, coordinated products and systems, and communication and software modules.

Therefore, power management lays the foundation for favorable power purchasing conditions. In addition, power management includes high-performance software modules for recording costs, maintenance, and load management. For event-driven operation and observation, it also visualizes power distribution for medium and low voltage.

Motors and Drives

The power losses of Siemens energy-saving motors are up to 45 percent lower. They will fit in with almost any drive design.

Siemens variable frequency drives allow electric drives with adjustable rotation speeds to be operated precisely in accordance with requirements. That is in contrast to conventional control processes such as throttle control. This is particularly helpful when operating fans, pumps, or compressors with savings of up to 50 percent. The program includes the complete drive train in its analysis, not just the individual drive.

Savings can be further increased by capturing the energy that is released when stopping a variable-speed drive and returning it to the power supply system. This technology for converting kinetic energy into electric power is already used by railways. It can also be applied to the production technology and the process industry, for example in cranes, machine tools, centrifuges, and pump systems, as well as to the area of transport, such as ship's propulsion systems. Three to ten percent of the supplied energy can be saved, depending on the application.

Volan cement Ltd. in the Inner Mongolia is the first ESPC (Energy Saving Performance Contract) project in Siemens China. With the 16 sets of SIMOVERT®Masterdrives with a total power of 1313 KW, the company realized savings rate > 35%

Taicang Power Plant is an environment protection power plant. Equipped with 20 sets perfect harmony MV converters.Only for the 4 condensate pumps, Taicang Power Plant realizes annual energy cost saving over 3.4 million RMB, which allows the plant to payback the investment in 19 months.

Software, motor and converter by Siemens helps industrial plants use less electricity

Energy distribution for industrial buildings has never been as complex as it is today. The planning software from the SIMARIS® family reduces the amount of time-consuming routine work. It provides an over-view of project implementation as early as the design planning phase and can respond to changes with minimum effort. SIMARIS® design also allows optimum -dimensioning, making sure that the most economical solutions are automatically -selected.

These software tools handle data analysis, improvements to the efficiency of equipment to reduce consumption and show energy flow. They coordinate energy sources by optimizing the energy mix, monitor compliance with energy purchasing contracts, and provide forecasts for purchasing. At the highest level, the planning level, they support company management on the basis of the analysis, for -example when planning energy purchasing, meeting maintenance deadlines, or scheduling personnel.

Industry still takes too little advantage of the opportunity to reduce the energy consumed by electrically-driven systems and thereby to cut costs. Automation & Drives now offers the SinaSave® software on the Internet which calculates potential energy savings free of charge and shows when an investment will reach the break-even point. The program is suitable for planning a new plant or modernizing an existing plant. SinaSave® is designed for the operation of engines with either a fixed or a variable motor speed when using a frequency drive. A great deal of energy and money can be saved in either case.

Solutions and Services

The Optiman energy management system is a service offered for power utilities or power plant operators with a view to optimizing their use of primary sources of energy, such as coal, oil and gas. The system controls and optimizes on-the-spot, daily and annual planning, thus reducing the amount of fuel used.

Daily optimization prepares the system for the requirements of the next 24 hours. The load forecasts take changes in the weather into account, for example. Annual optimization takes economic aspects into consideration, including scheduled maintenance tasks and contracts. Possible savings in power generation costs are between 2 and 5 percent

Industrial operations can significantly reduce their electricity bills using the Siemens CASTOMAT®ECS energy control system. Energy savings of up to 14 percent are possible, especially for plants whose energy requirements are subject to extreme fluctuations. CASTOMAT® ECS allows you to record and control your procurement, distribution and consumption of electrical energy in detail. Costly load peaks are prevented by automatically activating and deactivating various energy consumers, with no adverse effects on the production process. The system, which operates on the basis of the new Siemens PLC equipment, guarantees that optimum use is made of power purchase agreements. Steady consumption levels in the vicinity of the procurement maximum agreed with the utility also serve to restrict energy costs.

SIPAPERCIS Reject Power is a solution for paper manufacturers for extracting energy from waste which must otherwise be disposed of at high cost.? Good reasons for SIPAPERCIS Reject Power are: savings in energy and disposal costs and less greenhouse gases ¨C reduction of CO2 through the combustion of the biogenic components of the residual substances

An energy recovery system has been able to reduce the fuel consumption of navy and merchant marine vessels by up to ten percent. Pollutant emissions were reduced by the same order of magnitude. Siemens has expanded the so-called Siship boost to include a generator function and an exhaust gas recovery unit. It is possible for the first time to switch the booster from engine to generator function. That means that the total energy needs of the ship can be adjusted at any time to wind, swell, schedules, or security requirements. If the engine's full power isn't needed, the reserve output can be converted into electricity and fed to the ship's electrical system. Less efficient diesel generators that normally supply power on board can be powered down temporarily. That saves fuel, prolongs service life, and also reduces maintenance costs for the main propulsion system and diesel generators. An exhaust gas recovery system further improves the efficiency of the diesel drive. The heat contained in the exhaust is used in a heat exchanger to produce steam that drives a turbine. The back pressure of the exhaust gas flow also rotates a power turbine, causing it to act like a turbocharger. A generator converts the mechanical energy from the two turbines into electricity.

I&S is also concentrating on the development and use of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells, which operate at 60¡ã¨C80¡ã Celsius (140¡ã¨C176¡ã Fahrenheit). They are particularly suitable for mobile applications. Because they can quickly be switched on and off and respond dynamically to sudden load chan-ges. The fuel is pure hydrogen that is produced on a large scale by reforming natural gas or by electrolysis.

Airport logistics and postal automation

Intelligent logistical systems are always distinguished by improved energy consumption. Our modern conveyor and sorting systems for material flows operate only when goods must be moved. Energy-wasting continuous operation is no longer necessary. The savings are considerable, whether this involves suitcases in baggage handling systems or containers in sorting centers. The use of modern high-efficiency drive technologies also helps save a considerable amount of energy.

Not only that: Logistics can be made more effective overall using integrated automation solutions. For example, Siemens has built a new automatic forwarding system for the United States Postal Service to reduce misdirected mail. Some 17 percent of Americans move to a new home each year, and about 1.3 billion pieces of mail used to go to the wrong address each year. The new Siemens system prevents needless transport processes, thereby saving effort, expense, and energy.
